World Youth Skills Day

The United Nations, at its General Assembly in November 2014, declared 15th of every July as World Youth Skills Day. Hire the Youth is proud to be part of global recognition and promotion of skills. We believe skills do change the lives of young people today.

Hire the Youth is taking on youth unemployment, mental health & the skills gap by pioneering new ways to prepare, support and empower young people in Africa. Through the power of skills individuals, communities, and countries are propelled towards a more prosperous future.

In Uganda today, the overall youth (aged 18–30) comprises about 21% of the population (about 8.2 million people), with the majority (56%) being female. This is a special section of the population that can greatly spur development if made to meaningfully participate in the economy. They have to be well-educated, skilled, and healthy for productive involvement in the economy.

How to Participate

During the week of 15th July, in celebration of World Youth Skills Day, join us using the hashtag #WYSDug so we can see all your activities and events.

On our social media channels (@hiretheyouth), for World Youth Skills Day, we request skilled young people to share a story, article or video on what motivated them to learn a skill, what they learnt about themselves in the process, and how they continue to master their skills every day.

We encourage you to tag any videos or images posted on your social media with #WYSDug and #WYSD to connect to the larger World Youth Skills Day campaign.
