The Uganda Graduate Volunteer Scheme 2018

The Uganda Graduate Volunteer Scheme (UGVS) aims at providing young graduates access to workspaces to gain employability skills is an initiative supported by the Government of Uganda, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and United Nations Volunteer (UNV) Programme.

How Uganda Graduate Volunteer Scheme Works

In the pilot, the Uganda Graduate Volunteer Scheme will support the development of labor market intermediation services including job matching, job placement, job readiness training among others. The Scheme will recruit 500 graduate volunteers. Successful candidates will receive a one-week induction training on life, workplace and career development skills. Upon completing the training, the graduate volunteers will be placed in host institutions either in the public sector, private sector or civil society for a period of 12 months.

The scheme will partner with public and private enterprises in Agriculture, Tourism and Hospitality, Finance and Banking, Information Technology, Energy and Minerals, Infrastructure Development including construction, Health and Education and Social Development sectors to provide volunteer placement opportunities in their organizations in different parts of the country.

Benefits

In addition to induction training, volunteers placed with host organizations will receive training on the areas relevant to their work assignments from the host organizations and will be assigned mentors who will provide advice and guide their work throughout the placement period. All volunteers will be regularly visited by the Uganda Graduate Volunteer Scheme management team to check their progress and offer support. Furthermore, volunteers will receive a moderate monthly stipend from UGVS.

This GVS is a very wonderful initiative which is being appreciated by most graduates. However, from the Karamoja Region, there is a challenge that most graduates had especially getting access to the internet system so as to enable
them apply. This has resulted to most graduates not responding/applying for the scheme. We also need to really appreciate HELPCHILD KARAMOJA (HCK) for helping most of the graduates apply.

Happy new year UGVS Team, as a youth and fresh graduate, i highly appreciate you for this unique move. It shows us; the youth that Uganda is now realizing our noble contribution as citizens of this country. My comments are; is it possible to decentralize the scheme’s activities to district level so as to popularise the program and make it effectively known in remote districts based on the fact that the program still remains more popular in central? The other is that after application deadline; which period of time should one expect a notification from GVS Team? Thank you very much, God bless you in your daily tasks
